The things I want to do and feel, I find myself doing just the opposite. Especially that which I know I ought not do.
I was scrolling through IG when I encountered the phrase “miracles become Administrative” and it struck me how relatable this was.
As humans if nothing else, we adapt to situations whether good or bad. Eventually, what was so devastating becomes a new normal, what was amazing becomes a little bit burdensome.
It’s not lack of gratitude itself that is responsible for this disposition rather the inability to stay focused on overwhelming senses of amazement or bereavement for long.
Think of it, the moments you prayed for the job you have now and how now you sometimes wish you could quit and just sleep or do something else. Which was something you were doing before you realized you wanted the job.
Think of the moments spent on countless dates and dating apps on the search for “the one” and now you are in the loving relationship you wanted all these while only to be constantly arguing with the one and realizing that the one is very annoying most times.
Think of the moments when you looked forward to raising your family and having that cute baby that is yours and suddenly, you are living in your fantasy but your bundle of joy is a little demanding. Constant feeding, attention, lots of hidden cost you never thought about until you exchanged reality.
The question is whether it is possible to live in constant amazement of the wonders in your life, to romanticize your existence.
I will say the answer to this is individual and if we go by a scale of 100, it depends on what your cut off mark is.
As humans we may not always be in a state to prioritize gratitude and wonder considering all the other emotions we have to contend with daily but we can take time to appreciate the true magnitude of what we get to experience.
In the middle of that boring job, remember how it felt like to get the offer you once believed would change your life. Think back to when you finally knew you found your person, think back to the news of discovering your body holds a miracle.
In this case, it is about remembering what busyness makes you forget and file as ordinary. There is nothing ordinary about getting to experience your imaginations.
Miracles can be commonplace but they don’t have to be trivialized. However, it is okay to at least remember if not all the time, as often as possible the joy of getting exactly what you wished.
I will sum this up in the famous lyrics by Jay Cole “there is no such thing as a life that is better than yours”.
There lies all the value you need to romanticize your life. This is a ritual worth upholding. Gratitude in this context looks like obsession and this is healthy.
