A beautiful new day is not always that. At least, not for everyone.
As it dawns, sometimes, we really wish that it’d be dark again because we aren’t ready to leave our beds to go to work, school, a meeting we are dreading or simply because we’ve had a rough night. Somehow, that sets the pace for the drudgery of that day.
Some days, you just wake up and all you can think about is the sunset, warm sheets, netflix and chill, ice cream and cake, a glass of chardonnay, and all the endless possibilities of how a good day can feel.
In contrast, have you ever woken up one day and you are already tired for the next day? Well, I have been there so many times, I’ve lost count. Quoting a friend: “I am already tired tommorrow”. This is one of my favourite slogans when I feel this way.
Amazingly, there are also days, like weekends, when everything is awesome (the Lego Movie reference), and you can’t wait to get your day started. In fact, you sleep counting down with antsy, for the exictment that is sure to come your way the next day.
The funny thing is you don’t really know if that day would be as perfect as you’d imagined (take your wedding day as a paradigm), but you’d be sure to supervise that nothing goes wrong.
Look at the effort you put into a good day… when it is a bad day, it’s like you just hide under all the badness and let it drown you.
These examples, are just one of the several dimensions a day could adorn. Sometimes, a day, could mean to us, a futuristic achievement we have been working for (graduation), it could mean the length between a routine called life (days of the week) we’ve been practising since birth, it could be the happiest, or the saddest day of our lives, it could be exciting (road trip), boring(sitting in front of a desk), adventurous (sky diving), uneventful, bland and banal(discussion with “over sabi” family members)…
Even so, there are some days we become a part of midway (like the day we were born) and some days we never participate in,(like the day we die- literally, our eyes are closed in death).
Think for a moment, about all the possible varieties of daily experience each and every human being shares based on the station of their lives. I mean, even in a classroom (high school), we all write the same date at the corner of our notebooks, and yet before the end of the class, someone may be embarrassed or be flogged😢…
Some people wake up each day living with a disability, some wake up one day swinging from healthy to terminally ill in a matter of weeks, some wake up poor, only to blow, some wake up and make skits that just goes viral.
For some, in the four walls of a courtroom, they make their appearance before a judge and I don’t mean as a lawyer, but as a criminal expecting death sentence.
Yet, this one day, with the same date, being lived by all at the same time, may mean different things for different individuals, being that we are all just different chapters in this narrative called life.
A day is a mystery, a cloak that we can only experience, to classify. No matter how positive we are, our borrowed time will count down, and our days as humans will end (yeah, some day we become spirits or immortals. Call it what you are comfortable with, but it is sure to come).
We can choose to live life cautiously or on the edge, deliberately or carelessly, in faith or with fear, in gratitude or grumbling; with a positive mindset or pessimistic outlook…
Doubtless, it is true that the hours that counts in a day are not within our control. What we can control is what we do within our ability.
Ultimately, it matters that the life we live; is the one we choose. Since all these, will be recorded in a day!
Oh,What a day!
